THE NEW WINDOWS

What color wood would Woody want?

The Answer:  Douglas Fir (only a couple of dollars more than Pine,
but with much more character).  For my office (where two
double-windows will replace two single ones), I'll splurge on
Vertical Grain Douglas Fir (that costs a good deal more than Pine).

1980's, shortly after Vern had graduated from Amherst College, where,
as a religion major, he began his study and practice of Buddhism)

DINING AND PIANO ROOM

My father's 1919 Model O (5'10") Steinway sits in front of the west window
of my dining room, while the dining table is along the east window.  In honor of the
100th Anniversary of Dad's piano (and his 110th birthday), I've decided to have
the piano restored.  (Ten years of New England weather have not been good for the
instrument's external surfaces and finish, though the piano's innards aren't in bad
shape and don't require extensive work.)  My father bought this Baby Grand
just before my brother's birth in 1942 ... for $350.

Folks associated with Thayer Street have a world-class woodworking
and restoration shop and they've refurbished lots of pianos ...
a comforting thought as I watched them haul the 600-pound
instrument through the garage and onto a truck.

With piano and dining table removed, the six large windows
could be installed, beginning with the three EAST WINDOWS

WEST WINDOWS

The old paneling on the walls is cedar.  The new windows will be trimmed in cedar.
The Douglas Fir frames will be darkened slightly by a clear finish but they won't
be stained so the lovely grain will remain visible.
